sometimes i really wish we did not have to pay tithes. it seems like nothing but a stress. every time jess gets paid, we pay our bills and then i am like oh, we have to pay our tithes too..there goes money for groceries and such. it sucks. really sucks. i wish God didn't tell us to pay them..otherwise i wouldn't. it's not like we have to go without...we always seem to have money for groceries and gas but i am the one that does the bills and it just seems like such a stress. i shouldn't be complaining..but i don't care. i know God provides and all that crap but i am not in the mood to be all cheery and say that. None the less...He does provide and now i feel all guilty for not just having faith in Him. whatever...i got to go. i have a stupid muscle test tomorrow and in no way am i prepared to take it. life sucks sometimes.

I don't believe we are asked, under the New Covenant, to give 10%. I think we are asked to give 100%. In the specific case of money, we simply want to spend money the way that Jesus would want us to. The NT suggests that He would spend money to support the poor, support ministry, and support our families. How you spend God's money in those 3 areas, to me, is a matter between your family and God.
God has proven himself miraculously faithful in regards to our finances and we will continue to give more than 10%. Do it or do not but give in such a way that you can maintain a joyful spirit. God does not want you resenting his lordship over your life.
I agree wih Matt and Jon...it is a big step to go from seeing what you have as yours to seeing that what you have is ALL His. But when we truly recognize this, there is something that happens within our hearts that makes us so overwhelmingly thankful for all that we have that it changes our thinking. All of a sudden, we want to give back to Him FIRST, before paying our bills, not after; as a form of worship, not as a duty. And when our heart changes in this way, it is amazing to watch how the Lord stretches our finances, giving us opportunity after opportunity to bless others in His name.
